Insomnia

Understanding Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder, affecting millions of people around the world, characterised by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. Healthy sleep is fundamental to wellbeing and insomnia can significantly impair daily functioning and overall health. It can be triggered by various factors, including stress, anxiety, PTSD and other psychological issues.

Understanding Neuroplastic Pain

At the root of insomnia is our nervous systems familiarity with being in an activated state and perceived danger of entering a restful state. The brain plays a big part in this through its discomfort with dealing with uncertainty. Instead of easily dropping into a state of rest, the brain starts trying to solve problems and resolve anything that is uncertain of or worrying about. Although insomnia is not a condition associated with pain in the usual sense, beneath the restlessness there is a learned aversion to the sensations associated with rest and uncertainty. Chronic pain and Insomnia share a root-cause enabling a PRT practitioner to effectively treat insomnia using many of the tools normally applied to cases of chronic pain.

The Path to Recovery

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) can be an effective treatment for insomnia through:

  • Education: Understanding the neuroplastic components of insomnia, the nervous system habits and learned responses.

  • Reappraisal: Reducing fear and anxiety about sleep and sleeplessness.

  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Calming the nervous system.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: Changing negative thoughts about sleep.

  • Exposure: Challenging the brain’s discomfort of uncertainty through acclimatising to underlying sensations.
